Thrillers/Horror

These are some intense and exciting horror movies and thrillers. The thrillers are at the beginning and transition to horror as you go down. At the bottom I have put some of my recent favorite horror movies as well. We are really living in a resurgence of the genre, and we have some really great remakes to look forward to after the success of IT, Halloween and soon the new Chucky movie. The years of the campy crap sequels are over! For now…

Nightcrawler

Jake Gylanhal is a weirdo who chases down accidents for L.A. news channel b-role but quickly pushes the ethical boundaries when getting his footage. Gillenhall is fantastically creepy in this.

Triangle

This is kind of a time-warping/horror film mashup. Kind of an oddball movie: violent, fun to puzzle about, and gripping throughout. Don’t read any spoilers! It’s even better if cruises kind of freak you out.

Pairs well with a hurricane

I Saw the Devil

A bloody Korean revenge tale. Kind of like Oldboy with more blood. Uncomplicated but well executed, uncompromising and entertainingly violent. Enjoy the thrill ride and bring a poncho.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale

This film is bizarre and might not be for everyone but I guarantee its like nothing you’ve seen. This kind of flips the whole Santa naughty or nice thing on its head. A great change of pace for Halloween or Christmas.

Pairs well with eggnog and cookies

Bonus: TrollHunter - A mockumentary thriller in a similar vein to Rare Exports. Rotten Tomatoes (83%)

Low-Budget Horror

For anyone who dreams of making a movie knows a low budget thriller can punch way above its weight class. Here are some of my favorites.

Creep

Both this movie and the sequel, Creep 2 are excellent horror movies. Witty, different and deeply unsettling, these films rely on a clever use of found footage style and incredible acting by writer/directors Mark Duplass and Patrick Bice.

Pairs well with Wolf Pup IPA

In Fear

A young couple get lost on a road trip in Ireland and things begin to unravel. Simple concept executed absolutely perfectly. This movie grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go till your practically choking. Masterclass on how to do a lot with a little.

Pairs well with Kilkenny Ale

New Best Horror Movies of the 2010s

You may have seen these already but if you haven’t get to it. Each one of these films has something a little different than everything that has come before it.

The Conjuring - Perfect blend of the classic elements of horror: jump scares, suspense, creepy houses and kids/dogs. Rotten Tomatoes (85%)

The Babadook - A picture book that will haunt your dreams. Mom’s beware! Rotten Tomatoes (98%)

It Follows - Instead of a movie tape killing you in 7 days it’s your last lay! Rotten Tomatoes (96%)
