Bong Joon-Ho Movies

This is my favorite foreign director. He has been experimenting with genres and making international multi-lingual hits. He will be a major force in the future of film and already has been making US films for Netflix. Korea throws an insane amount of public money into the arts and its paying off. These are in order.

Okja

Yup. This one again. Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Gustavo Fring, Dano and they aren’t event the best characters. This movie deals with factory farming, multinational corporations, media propaganda, and eco terrorists all under the guise of a world sprawling coming of age adventure. And its funny! Classic bong.

Memories of Murder

Not a great place to start your Bong journey on, but this film is gritty crime thriller with some well placed humor and very clever twists (classic bong). Sort of like the best extended Korean Law and Order episode?

Unlike any monster movie I’ve seen. There are a lot of messages in this one. Very meta, suspenseful, and slapstick-funny this movie is an unexpectedly awesome monster flick.

Barking Dogs Never Bite

Another dark comedy that if you like everything before this movie your should watch. Some of the best k-cinema there is. Just classic bong.

This is also really great movie but super creepy… so if you and your mature audience can psychologically handle an Oedipal theme through the movie go for it. The main actress is incredibly chilling though. Don’t watch it with a new significant other or this will be your last date. I learned that the hard way with when I watched “girl with the dragon tattoo" with a first date :|
